4 Easy Tips to Work Your Net

June 24, 2009 – 10:50 am
I have taught over 1000 people the basics of proposal writing and how to research and approach foundations. Although I receive evaluations, I don’t always know how people apply the knowledge when they leave my classes.   About a week ago, while attending a networking event sponsored by the Atlanta Nonprofit Professionals and the Georgia Center for Nonprofits at Dania’s, I found out how four class attendees put their knowledge to work.   Dominique Harper who is growing his nonprofit M.A.D.E (Making a Difference Every Day) is now contracting with Shameika Logan, Ed.M, LMSW and Fana Abay, BS. After attending one of my classes, Shameika and Fana joined forces to start Your Grant Solutions, a grant writing consultancy that helps nonprofits secure resources to operate their programs. They already had the skill and knowledge, but when I mentioned that organizations often need skilled proposal writers, they formed their business and are up and running.   I ...

Getting the Best from Telemeetings

June 15, 2009 – 10:58 am
Have you ever participated in a teleconference or webinar and dozed off? Do you join calls, but find yourself muting your phone to handle other business? If you answered yes to these questions, you are not alone.   According to The Goodman Center’s newly released report Dialing In, Logging On, Nodding Off: The True Costs of Teleconferences, Videoconferences and Webinars, these behaviors make participating in such meetings more demanding than face-to-face meetings.   While the communication mediums are different, the report indicates the challenges with telemeetings are basically the same. Technical problems, poor leader facilitation, and disengaged attendees negatively impact meeting quality.   So before your next telemeeting, consider the following suggestions by The Goodman Center:   Know the technology- Managers need to ensure that all users, particularly facilitators are knowledgable about the technology. Take time to rehearse and give participants clear instructions on how to use the functions.   Prepare and practice- That means having an agenda, ...

RAVE! Uprising: Cultivate Meaning Daily

May 21, 2009 – 1:31 pm
I traveled to Las Vegas for a Train the Trainer workshop with Rave! Seminars. It was an awesome event. I created workshop curricula, played the slots, and toured lavish hotels on the strip. What made my trip particularly meaningful was reuniting with friends I hadn't seen since last summer.  Most people in the group have been working together for two years or more. They are a lively, entrepreneurial, hustling group of folks. Each time I am with them, I leave energized and ready to take on the world. When we are together, I barely notice that I'm actually working. Collaborating with friends on exciting projects affects me that way. This group brings out my best. Thankfully, I recognize that my RAVE! friends are reflecting what is inside of me. Therefore, regardless of my circumstances,  I can re-create those feelings anytime I choose. By doing so, I'm exercising the freedom to choose my attitude, which is one of the secrets in my upcoming book and ...

To Everything There is a Season

March 19, 2009 – 4:10 am
Article originally written and posted for the Foundation Center-Atlanta News reports are littered with updates on the economic crisis and how individuals, nonprofits, and foundations are fairing. To provide the nonprofit sector with up-to-date information, The Foundation Center has created a portal to share how present economic conditions are impacting giving. During this challenging time, let us remember the natural principle in the universe called the law of rhythm. You’ve heard some variation of this principle all of your life in sayings like 'what goes up, must come down'. We observe it in nature through the ebb and flow of tides, the coming and going of the seasons, and each evening when night descends upon day. Grantmakers and grantseekers alike are asking what they can do to weather economic uncertainty. While that question begs an answer, I’d like all of us to consider reflective questions, such as: How can we make the ...

The 40 Day Prosperity Plan

February 16, 2009 – 6:17 pm
The congregation of Hillside International Truth Center, founded by Rev. Dr. Barbara King, embarked upon a 40 day prosperity plan. You are to repeat the Statements of Principle every 10 days for 40 days. Print this post and use the statements to enhance your prosperity consciousness. I encourage yout to read Dave Ramsey or materials by other financial experts to help you change your money habits. We delude ourselves when we talk about prosperity without mentioning saving, debt reduction, and investing. 1. God is the deep, fathomless root of my being, the Source of my lavish abundance. From my Invisible God come all the visible forms of my life, which include all my money and supply, anything I could possibly imagine. God is my entire Reality. 2. The Source of my prosperity lies within the center of my being. With my thoughts and feelings I determine my good. Therefore, with a grateful, open ...

Conscious Conception: Food for Thought

December 22, 2008 – 5:00 am
Photo by artbyheather My friend, Yolanda Neals, does astrological natal charts designed to increase your understanding of your personality make-up. She recently read my chart and, I must say, it was rather fascinating.  Here is my N-Node, a key energy on the chart that speaks life to your purpose.  In this life you show up as the face of Integrity and you very passionately came to this earth to teach others in a Masterful and creative way how to evolve and grow in their consciousness.  Your primary goal is to expand and develop a concept to a higher level of awareness in a way that is nurturing and educating.  You truly care about people and you are here to elevate the consciousness of others! That’s a pretty powerful purpose. (My eighth grade English teacher would be proud of that “p” alliteration.) Yolanda also read the chart of a friend of mine who just had her ...

Give All Things, Not Some Things to God

December 15, 2008 – 4:56 am
Photo by mufan96 One evening as my husband and I sat down to eat dinner, I said a prayer. Although I don’t recall my exact prayer, I do remember saying something like, “I’ve done all that I can do God, now you step in and do the rest, I’m giving this part to you.” After my customary ending, “Bless our families, friends and loved ones, those who are here, those who have passed on, and those yet to be born. Amen.”   My husband turned to me and quizzically asked, “Why don’t you give it all to God?”  I sheepishly smiled, as the profoundness of his simple question sunk into my mind. In that moment I realized how my words and actions lately were, in essence, saying to Spirit “I can handle this, but when I need you, I will call you.” We sometimes forget that Spirit is always present. We forget, not Spirit. ...
